Most Brisbane households and businesses are sitting on scrap metal they do not realise has value. Old appliances, copper wiring, aluminium frames, steel offcuts from a building project. All of it adds up.
Here is what you need to know before you load up the ute.
Know What You Have
Scrap metal falls into two categories: ferrous and non-ferrous. Ferrous metals contain iron, think steel and cast iron. Non-ferrous metals do not, and they include copper, aluminium, brass, stainless steel, and lead. Non-ferrous metals generally fetch a higher price per kilogram.
A simple test: hold a magnet to it. If it sticks, it is likely ferrous. If it does not, it is non-ferrous and worth more.
Sort Your Metal Before You Arrive
Sorted metal earns more. Mixed loads take longer to process and are priced conservatively. Separating copper from aluminium, or clean steel from mixed light iron, takes a few minutes at home and puts more money in your pocket.
Bring ID With You
Queensland law requires scrap metal dealers to record seller details for regulated metals. Bring your driver’s licence or another form of photo ID.
